When you get testimonials, thank you is the most frequent reply. This is just a little reminder that you can help the giver by letting others share your testimonials.

Marketing Tips – What To Do When Your Small Business Goes Online

When our small business goes online, as the owner we’re probably temped to hide. Knowing what to do when your small business goes online for the first time makes a difference.

Even so, anything new can be a little bit scary. So it’s certainly understandable!

I’m writing to share a few marketing tips for us as small business owners. Because it can be fun and exciting as we unleash the power of the Internet and begin using Internet marketing.

Call to Action

  • When our small business is online, we want to pay attention to giving a call to action.
  • A call to action is simply a statement that tells a reader what to do, what the benefits are, and how to do it.
  • In fact, we want to practice this as often as possible! It’s okay to include a call to action everywhere our small business is represented on the Internet.

One way we can do this is to give free gifts.

  • Free gifts are popular.
  • When we give free gifts as incentives for answering our call to action, people who fit our free gift are more likely to do what we want them to do.
  • And that’s to begin to engage with us by giving us their contact information and permission to interact.

How?

  • Be direct.
  • Let’s not play games.
  • Instead, let’s stick to simple and easy.
  • Let’s tell people exactly what to do.
  • Let’s tell them what they stand to get as a result of taking action.
  • Let’s promise what will happen when they act. Then let’s do what we say we’re going to do.

As human beings, when we’ve got something that’s actionable, it’s easy for us to act, right? That’s true for the people we want to attract to us.

That’s because human beings let go of being indecisive or even lost when we know what to do next, how to do it and that there’s a result coming that we want as our own specific outcome.

So let’s give those good feelings to whoever encounters us online. Let’s make it easy to know what to do next, how to do it and what kind of result is going to happen.

Here’s what giving good feelings boils down to:

  • Provide content online.
  • Make it easy for readers who want more to connect with us.
  • Tell our readers about the good stuff that’s going to result.
  • Tell our readers what to do and how to do it.

Let’s give a call to action at the end of our content.

  • Everywhere!
  • Let’s keep it simple.
  • Let’s relate our call to action to whatever our reader just finished reading, listening to or looking at.

What does keeping it simple and easy feel like?

  • Let’s allow our call to action to direct our reader to a link to click.
  • Let’s make the link be to our squeeze page.
  • Let’s allow our squeeze page to do exactly one thing: get contact information.
  • Let’s put that squeeze page right into the content whenever it fits.

Article Marketing

There’s a huge need for answers in life, isn’t there? Article marketing is a way we can share a little bit of our expertise.

When we share a little bit of expertise, people get a little bit of answers. That might be exactly what someone needs right now to take the next step toward solving a problem.

When it does?

We’ve got wow power.

After all, when we guide someone to their next step, we’ve delivered a specific outcome. People love specific outcomes because results matter.

When we’ve earned that wow power, it’s a good time to invite people to join our list to learn more.

Why?

  • Because they fit who we can help!
  • Because when we as people finish one next step there’s going to be another and another.
  • Because eventually we as people get stuck again on some next step!

In fact, that’s why article marketing works!

  • We help people before we meet.
  • We help people more when they ask for more by subscribing.
  • Then over time, we engage by helping more.
  • All things being equal, when people are ready to buy they’re more likely to buy from us than from some stranger.

Helping people:

Being on our email list means we get to deliver results in the form of help on a regular basis. As we help, our subscribers begin to respect, like and trust us.

When our subscribers are ready to buy, as buyers they know us, some will choose to buy from us. It’s that simple and easy when the entire process takes place. And it’s that difficult when we don’t have a process in place!

Buyers buy. We want to be a known, respected, liked, trusted adviser when a buyer’s buying takes place.

We help people!

  • That’s what article marketing is about. Helping people!
  • Article marketing is simply the practice of providing content all over the Internet. Providing help in little chunks!
  • Then we place our content in places our best future buyers are likely to be hanging out.
  • Publishers of articles have audiences. People hungry for information! We want to find the places where people who are hungry for what we deliver go.

Publishers generally get paid from the advertisers on their site:

  • Generally publishers don’t pay us for contributing articles.
  • On the other hand, we don’t have to pay to place our stuff. Because our stuff gets to stay there, we benefit from our effort over time.
  • Unlike advertising, we don’t have to pay for the exposure we get with article marketing. The investment we make is our time.

Moving parts:

  • Time is a one-time expense.
  • Article marketing gives us ongoing exposure.
  • It’s the investment of your time when we write ourself – or the still one-time expense of paying staff or outsourcing the writing.

Business risk:

  • There is a risk. The place we put our stuff may boot us out or may go under.
  • Being in business is risky. We simply must choose wisely – and be prepared to say, “O well!” when the places we choose go under.
  • That’s why we don’t put all our stuff in one place!

Exposure appetizers?

  • Our articles are appetizers.Our email lists are appetizers too.
  • That’s to say, we make an exposure that doesn’t fill up our readers.

We want our readers to want more!

  • So, let’s prepare our readers to want more.
  • Let’s keep our appetizers in the realm of stuff that increases appetite.
  • Our call to action goes at the end of each article.
  • Our squeeze page goes at the other end of the link!

Technology:

  • Our squeeze page collects contact information.
  • But when we can put the technology right with the article? It’s easier for our reader, so that’s often a good choice.
  • Our list technology goes into action automatically, delivering our free gift and sending our welcome message.

Portion control in article marketing:

  • When someone consumes the entire appetizer? We want them to reach our call to action still hungry for more.
  • Let that more be a free gift, some kind of information gift we make ourself so we build credibility by showing our expertise.
  • Let’s make it easy for our readers to follow through, “Right now!” while the appetizer of the article has them “still hungry!”
  • We want the growling stomach urgency of having eaten our appetizer to drive a hunger for more, “Right now!” while that taste is still upon the tongue.

Hungry readers act!

  • We give clear directions. That’s how we get subscribers.
  • Fresh new subscribers get good stuff you automatically deliver.
  • Our subscribers learn to respect, like and trust us.
  • Over time, when our subscribers choose to buy from the world, they choose us simply and easily because they got to know us and because when buyers buy they buy from someone!

Volume

Unleashing the power of the Internet requires volume.

I’ve shared a little bit of my new skills. Here’s another example, I released tiny information products that generated $41,650 revenue by over 150 affiliates in a testing mode. I deleted them (I was testing!) and am updating them as I prepare to sell my own work myself because it helped me choose my direction.

Turning up the volume

  • Article marketing is one way for people to find us. That’s why I’ve done a few here and there, in learning and testing.
  • It’s time to do more. Lots more. For me. For you!
  • It’s time to turn up the volume. Let’s share our expertise!

We want and need to do article marketing in volume. Turning up the sheer volume of stuff we get onto the Internet for people to find us with matters. Because that’s how people find us.

Here’s an example of volume! Sean Mize submitted thousands of articles, resulting in visitors and even articles about how he uses article marketing for traffic generation. Now people continue going to his body of work, year after year.

That’s staying power! That’s what to do when your small business goes online. Later, we can advertise. Let’s start out with exposure we don’t need to pay for more than the one time we create the content itself!

Leadership Tips – How To Write An Email

Leadership tips are often simple concepts made memorable. How to write an email is intended as a leadership tip for you to use.

First tip? Keep it simple and easy.

Whatever we do, that’s good advice. In life and in business, right?

How to write an email has extra dangers unless we stick with simple and easy. That’s because with email there’s no context.

Email has no context:

  • Because email lacks your handshake
  • Because email is missing your formal bow.
  • Because email doesn’t show your respectful greeting.
  • Because your tone of voice is stripped out.
  • Because your smile doesn’t go with the email.

When we write an email, it’s by typing out words and sending them off on the Internet. Quite often, we probably write email day in and day out without pausing to think.

Most people do! But there is a danger.

How we write an email is one of those little things that matters far more than we may realize.

That’s exactly why I’m writing. Our email matters. A lot!

5 Habits To Gain On How To Write An Email

Changing habits can be difficult. After all, it took effort over time to develop a habit.

Unlearning one thing can be challenging. Learning a new thing can be a challenge.

Combining unlearning with learning? Yikes.

That’s why it’s best to stick with simple and easy. Life’s complicated enough as it is.

When we choose to change our habits we only need an instant.

  • So let’s decide right now!
  • Let’s make our email effective.
  • Let’s do it in simple and easy ways.

When we choose to implement a change, we may need a lifetime. People often do simply because implementation is where we as human beings get stuck.

But let’s focus on making it so right now!

  • Let’s do it in tiny steps because when we keep change simple it’s doable.
  • Let’s commit because we matter so we can make a difference.
  • Let’s engage starting now so we can learn how to write an email.

New Habits:

(1)  Let’s use our subject line well!

Let’s pay attention to saying, “Hello!” Let’s do so in ways that fit us.

Let’s include words we normally would use to grab attention.

Because that’s how we’ll succeed online! Writing a subject line that gets our intended audience to open our email gets results.

(2)  Let’s greet our reader!

Our first sentence is right after our headline. That’s where people go next.

But there’s a momentary gap of time between that action of, “Click!” and our first words entering a mind eagerly prepared to connect with us.

Let’s go ahead and ask a question if that matches our style. After all, questions are quite effective in how to write an email because we’re focusing attention on the human being who just opened our email.

Let’s greet like a handshake. Or like a bow if that’s our style.

Let’s be personable. Let’s be ourself!

That’s how we’ll write the first sentence of our email in a way that reflects well on us as a leader. That’s how we’ll get results.

(3)  Let’s share a story!

Our reader no doubt has read far too many emails before ours. Including boring ones!

One way to avoid being boring is to share what we’re trying to accomplish in a story. Our story can be simple and easy. Our story can be so short it may fit in one sentence.

When a story fits, we’re memorable. That’s how we’ll be memorable in how we write our email. Let’s allow our leadership to shine through by the stories we choose to try out in our emails.

Because stories make a difference. Because stories get results.

(4)  Let’s ask a question!

Asking questions gets people thinking! When we learn to make this part of our style after we share a story.

Yes, even if we start out with a question followed by a story! We can still ask a question next.

It may fit. It may not.

But let’s try so we can find out! It’s a great new habit to engage people

Let’s engage our reader. A question can open a mind and a heart.

Opening minds gets a little bit of thinking and wondering in play. That’s helpful, right?

When we open people’s minds and hearts we prepare for action.

(5)  Let’s call for action!

When we want people to take action, we can help them to do so. We can help by giving clear instructions and clear benefits for acting.

Let’s dare to tell our reader what to do. Let’s dare to give a good reason.

Let’s be clear. Let’s be concise.

That’s how our writing gets our reader to take action!

  • We make it simple and easy.
  • We inspire our reader to want to do what we invite them to do.

(6)  Let’s sign Off!

How to write an email includes a personal touch in ending. Ending our email is when we send people off with a good feeling.

How we’re signing off is a personal style thing. I often end with, “Peace” or “Blessings” — or both! — because that feels like it fits for me now.

What fits you? Use that as your closing!

When we do all this we’ve learned how to write an email!

  • Because that’s how to write an email that matters.
  • Because we get to engage with our reader.
  • Because we’ve written an email that matters to our reader!
  • Because our email now has a chance to get results that matter to us.

Tips For Leadership – How You Can Gain Courage

Courage does not mean you are not scared. Courage is about feeling your fear and acting anyway. Courage is you taking action! Courage is how to succeed online.

Your courageous action demonstrates enthusiasm. Leaders must have followers in order to lead, right? Well, your followers must see your enthusiasm in your eyes while you’re showing your courage by taking action. Take action, persist, and you will succeed online and offline!

Your enthusiasm is critical to your followers. Your enthusiasm in taking action courageously creates the kind of inspiration that builds loyalty. When you make the effort to build loyalty, you turn a group of people into a team inspired to work toward common goals. Your enthusiasm will help you learn how to succeed online.

How do you get courage and enthusiasm for taking action? Part of that comes from looking at fear head on and asking yourself, “Why?” Watch out — you will often find good reasons for fear! But take action, learn from it, and you will succeed online. This is equally true offline!

Your constant watchful awareness of “What is this fear for?” begins to challenge you to grow. That’s where the ability to avoid the “flight or fight” reaction that’s built in to us as human beings. Overcoming that reaction demands building a habit and practicing that habit. Practice your habit of succeeding online and it will become how to succeed online for you over time.

As you develop your habit of moving beyond reaction to response you will begin to command respect. Developing a habit of courage is part of leadership. Being able to pause that little moment between fear and reaction is where you give birth to your ability to choose your response. Choosing your response becomes a natural habit given enough time. Your choices will help you learn how to succeed online a little bit here, a little bit there.

Your courage in choosing to respond is one of the top criteria of leadership. People can observe a situation and how you respond. Seeing you respond with courage instills confidence. In you and your followers! That’s an important part of how to succeed online, simply one situation after another.

How do you build a habit of courageous action, and how does that differ from rash reaction? First, you train yourself to stop, pause, and consider, “How do I want to respond?” You allow yourself to wonder, “What if I respond with action?” Then act. You’ll teach yourself how to succeed online in a way that fits you exactly because you’re developing a process based on YOU!

You learn to be able to deflect your reaction when your “flight or flight” reaction is triggered by fear. You gain the ability to look inside. You learn to notice fear and move beyond fear to examine potential actions and some of the more likely implications of taking those actions. Sometimes you’ll goof. That’s an endearing part of the process of how to succeed online because your followers can learn how you handle your goofs as they follow you. Your role model of “Oops!” and “O well!” followed by handling the problem becomes part of what you teach about how to succeed online and in life generally.

You find a response amid your potential actions. You act decisively. You “blow it” by reacting, too, because you’re not going to be perfect at this no matter how well you instill your habit. Yes, you’ll blow it repeatedly. And the silver lining in that is that you’ll be creating teachable moments each and every time you “blow it” and show how to “fix it” and how to succeed online becomes a living blooming lesson for your followers. You make a difference in the world by being willing to find a response amid your potential actions and explaining the steps.

You learn to expect to feel fear — and you learn to work within and around fear. You learn to step out of your comfort zone. You learn to choose to act anyway. You’re not going to get to skip fear. Sorry if you didn’t know that! But you are going to get to experience the other fact of life that fear can be worked around in ways that help you and whoever’s observing you to grow in leaps and bounds. Part of how to succeed online is to learn to work within and around fear, expect fear, and simply act to handle fear.

You gain courage step-by-step through practice! Sometimes you’ll succeed. Sometimes you’ll even begin to get noticed by people surrounding you and start to gain respect as a leader. As you practice with helping people, the people you help will gain courage by emulating you. You acting as a role model is part of what you deliver about how to succeed online.

You will begin inspiring loyalty. Loyalty leads to a lot more than tasks getting completed. Loyalty changes the equation completely. When you help someone learn through experiences you’ll find that people appreciate you. Some will thank you. Some will also become quite loyal to you. You can inspire loyalty in ways that help you to help people do what they need to do to transform their lives in ways they may have only dared dream in tiny pieces. As you help people in ways that deliver results, the people you help will begin dreaming bigger dreams. You’ll be able to help them! You’ll experience loyalty to helping people too, not letting yourself off your own learning curve so that you are able to grow and continue to help those you’re delivering results for.

Tip for leadership:  successful leadership requires courage.

Tech Tips- Email and Connecting with People can seem at cross purposes. After all… email is a high tech tool. Don’t let that fool you! Connecting with people is high touch.

Fast. Email is fast! Enter a few words, click to send. Whee! There goes your message.

Bumps.

You also get bumps, mistakes, and potential disasters along with the benefit of fast, easy delivery of your words.

Technical advice and tips often focus on the use of technology, don’t they?

That’s not going to be the case here!

This tip is about your need to look deeper with email and connecting with people.

Value.

Business is about relationships. Business is an exchange of value within the realm of some type of relationship. Relationships form through people who connect with one another.

Your ability to connect with people determines your success.

Audience.

The secret of using email for connecting with people is simple. Business owners must remember that when you use this technology you don’t see your audience. You are invisible, too.

Email removes you and your audience from one another.

Connect.

When you connect with a human being, you can smile, shake hands, engage in, “small talk” and see and hear responses and reactions. You can begin creating trust. Familiarity. Liking. Respect.

Those are some of what leads to trust. Connect and trust! Trust is the foundation of relationships.

Email doesn’t smile…

You Matter.

When you know you matter to someone, you pay attention to them in a different way. When you pay attention, you connect. You open a pathway to relationship.

When you make time and expend effort to connect, you’re saying, “You matter!”

Email just sits there.

Context.

In fact, when you’re connecting with someone and being clear, “you matter” you’re adding context to your communication. You’re putting your communication into the the context of openness and trust. Context opens minds and hearts.

Email has no context.

Compassion.

Life’s messy, isn’t it? When the whole fight or flight reaction enters our mind and body it takes over. Sometimes fear triggers that fight or flight reaction, even in a safe situation. Compassion is what gives the moment to choose to respond rather than react.

Compassionate filling in of the gaps is what gently builds time and space for each connection. When you want to connect with someone you don’t know? You need to be recognized by that person’s bodily reactions as safe.

1. Safe as in: “Okay, brain, turn off your body’s fight or flight reaction.”
2. Safe as in, “This is how safe this one unique person is to connect with.”

Here and now.

You connect in a moment of, “here and now” with a person. Connecting can help smooth the differences between people. Your high tech email gets the benefit of the doubt when there’s a connection.

In fact, connecting is how you can fill gaps of communicating. You know how words can be interpreted in a number of ways, right? When you’re connecting with people the secret ingredient you gain, your secret sauce so to speak, is gaining the benefit of the doubt.

Email “here and now” does not make the connection, but can rely on existing connection.

Gentle.

When you want to connect with someone you don’t know you are more gentle than you might be otherwise in that situation. When you’re gentle and on common ground there is a chance for a growing recognition of one another. That recognition melts your built-in fight or flight reaction.

Email is one way communication, there is no growing recognition taking place.

Reaction.

If your gentleness does not prompt some spark of recognition, that’s when trouble brews. People still have their fight or flight reaction turned on full throttle, instant access. Your body does not give space for response, just a fight or flight reaction.

Email gentleness can be missed, misunderstood, or distrusted.

Bowing, shaking hands.

Shortcuts are in place in many cultures. Bowing and shaking hands do more than show respect. They provide connection. When bows match what’s going on, when handshakes are appropriate to here and now, common ground is established.

Cultural cues give space for response rather than reaction.

Email removes cultural cues.

Reaction.

Fight or flight as an instant reaction can subside with cultural cues. You allow giving benefit of the doubt rather than simply fight or flight reactions. You’ll trip reaction into response with compassion, too.

Email provokes reactions you cannot see or hear.

Benefit of the doubt.

Opening a connection changes everything. Benefit of the doubt stretches that little tiny moment between reacting (fight or flight), and responding (connection). Benefit of the doubt, given out of a connection, is the secret of effective email communication.

Tech tip.
